A civilization is often defined as a complex human institution with five characteristics. They are: (1) advanced cities (2) specialized workers, (3) complex institutions, (4) record keeping, and (5) advanced technology.
Although there is no standard definition of culture it can be thought of as a system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviours, and artifacts that the members of society use to cope with their world and with one another, and that are transmitted from generation to generation through learning. so, what is the difference between the term civilization and the term culture? Civilization is a bigger unit than culture is because it is a complex \collection of the society that dwells within a certain area, along with its forms of government, norms, and even culture. Therefore, culture is just a portion of an entire civilization. Culture can become a physical material if it is a product of the beliefs, customs and practices of a certain people with a definite culture...but a civilization is something that can be seen as a whole and it is more or less tangible although its basic components, like culture, can be immaterial. Give this video "The First Civilizations" a chance...it gets really informative around the 2 minute mark and helps to explain the Sumerians...who we will be studying in Unit 2. There is a well explained timeline that you can use as inspiration for your timeline, if you choose to do it as a bonus project.
